Male' City

Just a shot ferry ride from Hulhumale', the capital of Maldives is one of the most densely populated(by land ratio) cities in the world. The country's major Hospitals, Schools, Restaurants and Government Institutions are in Male'. Thousands of tourists from the neighbouring resorts visit Male' everyday to explore the historical places and to visit the many souvenir shops on the island.

The Capital

Traditionally it was the King's Island, from where the ancient Maldive Royal dynasties ruled and where the palace was located. The city was then called "Mahal". Formerly it was a walled city surrounded by fortifications and gates (doroshi). The Royal Palace (Gan'duvaru) was destroyed along with the picturesque forts (kotte) and bastions (buruzu) when the city was remodelled under President Ibrahim Nasir's rule in the aftermath of the abolition of the monarchy. However, the beautifully decorated Malé Friday Mosque remains. In recent years, the island has been considerably expanded through land-filling operations.
